What began as tragedy has become a source of hope and inspiration to Milwaukee youth...through efforts of The Scooter Foundation.

With a mission of Making Memories Matter, the foundation is a living remembrance of Scott "Scooter" Schmidt, a victim of gun violence in May, 2005. Scooter was known in the Water Street community and beyond for his kind heart and generosity toward others. The Scooter Foundation was formed to keep Scooter's vibrant spirit alive, to raise awareness of the toll gun violence inflicts, and to inspire change among our community's youth.

Susan's Corner ...

"...Hello Everyone! ...

Thanks to the most amazing volunteers, community members, and incredible students that showed up in the rain on Saturday April 24th. What a memorable day we had. What has been a dream or vision of mine since the very first time I arrived at O. W. Holmes School over four years ago. Thanks to everyone that helped make that dream a reality. Scooter's Garden of Hope is such an incredible gift to the students and community. With special thanks to our sponsors: Actaea Works Salon and Spa, The very dedicated volunteers from Kohl's, Whole Foods Market, Bliffert Lumber, Sweet Water Foundation, Solid Concrete Counter Tops, Bay View Art and Design, Gretchen Meade of Victory Garden Initiative, UWM center for Volunteerism, Lake Front Brewery, Alterra Coffee, Tulipomania European Flowers and Urban Garden Designer Jackie McGraw. In addition I would like to thank the Garden Committee which met every week for 6 weeks: Nalissa, Jessi, Sarah, and Natalie. Our Student garden committee helped in the design and building of the garden, and most importantly will sustain the garden. Mr. Payton who kicked off the garden last year and was instrumental in the clean up on April 11th and building the garden on April 24th. Many thanks to Ms. Nonna and Hannah who organized an incredible lunch for all of the workers. I would like to thank Howard from Sweet Water for his humble wit and wisdom. Of Course I would like to Thank Ms. Mays (also known as our angel) for her never ending commitment to the students and the foundation. It was great having Ms. Wallace the principal of O. W. Holmes elementary school even though it was raining. It certainly was a memorable day and will live in my heart, the students and the community for a very long time. I thank you for all that you did.

Peace to all - Susan

Our colorful People pins are now available. Please show an outward sign of support by wearing our pins. Represent our Foundation, share with the people you meet information about our work.

The price is $2 per pin, 5 for $10. Please contact Susan if you're interested. They would make a nice hat or lapel pin! Thank you.

... Even more from Susan ...

Speaking of Whole Foods, they have announced the Scooter Foundation to be a non-profit recipient of their very generous "Dime at a Time" program, the reusable bag fee generated this year from April through June. Those proceeds, along with the "Smoothie" profit from this years June 19th Solstice Festival on North Ave., and all money earned from our "People Pin" sales will go entirely to funding our new Garden of Hope! ... thanks again, ..."
